Following World War II, Italian industrial designers began to earn worldwide acclaim for their lamp and lighting designs; since then the country has produced landmark models that have become classics of modern and contemporary design, such as lamps by the Castiglioni brothers and Artemide. This richly illustrated book documents the evolution of Italian lamp and lighting design from 1945 to the end of the twentieth century. The book reproduces more than 300 archival and new photographs, original advertisements, product displays, and installations of lights and lighting. The volume is the second in a new series, inauguarated by ABC: Twentieth-Century Graphic Design, aimed not just at a traditional readership of architects but also at people working in the field of graphics and students at design schools. This book is a fascinating look at one of the products that has made Italy synonymous with style and innovative product design: lamps and lighting. Since the 1950s, when Gino Sarfatti redefined the concept of the modern lamp with his designs for Arteluce, Italy has produced thousands of coveted and classic lighting products and systems. The Castiglioni brothers, Pier Giacomo and Achille, unwittingly started a cult following with their metallic are globe lamps of the 1960s; the Memphis postmodern group of the 1970s and 1980s introduced primary color, Iaminates, and whimsy; the Tizio (1972) and Tolomeo (1986) desk lamps are still a favorite in offices worldwide; and today's hottest designers - including Philippe Starck, Ross Lovegrove, and Ron Arad, have all designed lighting for Italian manufacturers. imed at design cognoscenti and the general public alike, this book is the first and only publication in English to tell the story of Italian lighting design of the postwar period. It consists of 17 sections organized thematically and roughly chronologically, with 340 archival and new photographs, original advertisements, product displays, and installations of lights and lighting, all in full color and duotone. The book spans a wide range of eras and topics, beginning with a discussion of the "Luminator" table-top lamp introduced in the magazine Casabella in 1934 and ending with an overview of contemporary minimal and pop designs, innovative materials, and new technologies. The essays by design historian Alberto Bassi are accessible and well-written, incorporating quotes from and interviews with the designers and critics as well as touching on interior design, social history, advertising, and business history. Altogether this is an excellent sourcebook for anyone working in a design field or who is interested in Italian design and style.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS:
Small But Powerful -

When I first got my copy I was a little dismayed that almost all the photos are black & white and a very quick skim of the text left me with the impression that this would be a dry, technical experience. Once I started really reading and studying the images that impression changed fast. This is a wonderful overview of postwar Italian lighting, overflowing with dazzling examples of Italian design genius. These pieces are so purely beautiful, the lack of color is actually an asset. The text is interesting and very informative, especially if (like me) you don't know too terribly much about the subject before diving in.
